Harnessing the power of nature to develop new therapies

Contact:

Our mission is to improve treatments for patients whose medical needs are currently poorly met or unmet. We develop products based on effective natural molecules. These have been derived from a detailed investigation of the interactions with the human body of organisms that are known to have healing properties.

Sherwood's main focus is upon the development of wound care products for chronic, non-healing wounds that may persist for months or even years. They may be caused by infection, burns, pressure sores or underlying pathologies, such as diabetes, obesity or circulatory problems. The elderly are particularly susceptible to developing chronic wounds. Thus, the discovery of effective treatments is becoming increasingly important due to the ageing populations of the developed world and rapidly increasing rates of obesity and diabetes.

Certain insect larvae or maggots have been known for centuries to have healing properties (even mentioned in the film "Gladiator"!). Sherwood has isolated the active enzymes and is developing them into wound-care treatments.

A second line of products is targeted to the alleviation of autoimmune diseases such as psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. These are being developed from molecules secreted by hookworms to modulate the human immune response.

Sherwood Therapeutics is biotechnology spin-out from the University of Nottingham and DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory)
